especially hard optional bosses have on-the-spot unlimited retries that work even in permadeath mode. paths from checkpoint to boss don't have timed obstacles (like moving platforms that you have to wait for and then wait as they move to the destination) - go as fast as you can there's a checkpoint near every boss except one (if a checkpoint seems to be far away, there has to be a shortcut that you missed)

Not only it's a great game (better controls, better mechanics, tons of content, actually has a story - HLD doesn't, it's just a collection of mood pieces), they've been releasing even more content for free and keeping the GOG version up to date. If you're concerned about dev ethics, I highly recommend Hollow Knight. Enemies and medkits respawn you use a heal point and the area's boss is still alive.
